There’s been so much talk about Cynthia Morgan in the last month. After going underground regin early 2018, tweets started to surface from the most unlikeliest of sources asking where Cynthia Morgan was. Even Adesua Etomi chipped in at some point, genuinely worried about the princess of Nigerian reggaeton. And we could totally understand their apprehension, after all at the height of Cynthia Morgan’s creative genius, she was singularly the most original reggae singer in the Nigerian music industry, easily besting industry faves like Patoranking and Timaya. Every song she dropped became a hit, and she navigated her image and sexuality with the kind of control we rarely see from women artists in the industry. So to just fall off like that touched a few nerves.
Well, personal problems aside, it seems Cynthia Morgan is not letting anything keep her down, not even her own stage name.
She’s changed her stage name from Cynthia Morgan to Madrina, purged her social media channels of all the vestiges of her former image and put out a brand new single, “Billion Dollar Woman”. According to her social media, she seems to have changed labels as well, leaving Jude Okoye’s Square Records. Official Madrina is coming out the gates swinging if her new single is anything to go by, its a classic dance hall beat, more mellow than we’d normally expect and with a distinct positive message about self empowerment for women. Her decision to release a high concept music video for the song as well is a clear message that rumours of her financial woes might be grossly over-exaggerated. We hope that’s true for her own sake, cos what would it profit the Madrina to release a video as good as this and not be able to promote because she’s in jail for tax evasion.
