Steve Scalise to undergo third surgery from gunshot in mass shooting

Steve Scalise, House Majority Whip who was shot Wednesday during a congressional baseball practice, is undergoing his third surgery Thursday.

Reports that the Senior Republican is in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and to undergo a third operation. According to a hospital statement, Wednesday, the bullet had fractured bones in his hip and torn through internal organ, and Scalise, had been receiving multiple units of blood transfusion.

The third surgery according to familiar sources is routine for the doctors to go in and check what they had previously done. The President who visited Scalise at the hospital with the first lady said the Republican was in “tough shape”  and a “great fighter.”

“It’s been much more difficult than people even thought at the time. It’s been — he’s in some trouble, but he is a great fighter and he is going to be okay, we hope,” he said at a White House event.  “I have a feeling that Steve has made a great sacrifice, but there could be some unity being brought to our country. Let’s hope so”, he said.

According  to Politico, Rep. Roger Marshall (R-Kans) said that people all over are praying for Scalise and his family and also the other injured  “Steve is a great friend and father and a mentor to many of us”. Several lawmakers in the conference said leadership told them Scalise was likely in surgery at that very moment. But beyond that and a brief discussion of the hospital statement released Wednesday night, leadership did not give additional details on his condition or prognosis.

They also asked members not to comment on Scalise’s condition, hoping to tamp down any rumor mills that might start churning as Scalise remains in the hospital. Vice President Mike Pence and his wife visited Scalise Thursday morning but did not provide additional information about his recovery.
