The United Nations General Assembly is a meeting which Buhari, as Nigeria’s President, is required to attend, but it seems to have come at a time when the nation could have done with the President staying at home.
Buhari is now in New York and will give his speech to world leaders on Tuesday, 19th September, roughly a year to the day of his address at the 71st session last year. The President left Nigeria under the cloud of tension in the South Eastern part of the country, especially Abia state where the military operation, Python Dance II, had caused consternation. The operation has commenced and Crocodile Smile is scheduled to take place in the South South and South West geopolitical zones.
The statehouse announced that Buhari has been joined in New York by his cabinet Ministers, which will supposedly include the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau. That should not stop the Police and law enforcement agencies from performing their duties and maintaining order in parts of the country where small whispers of violence were heard last week.
Terrorism will be on the agenda at New York and the bombing at Maiduguri today in which 15 causalities have been reported may add more urgency on the Nigerian contingent to bring back more pro-active measures for bringing their diabolic sect to a definite end. Nigeria continues to be faced with the problem of internal displacement with the scourges of Boko Haram and it should become more expedient to put a stop to it.
On the economic scene, the attention of common Nigerians will be on the market hoping for a ‘true exit’ from the recession. The NBS released statistics at the beginning of the month announcing the country was out of its two year recession based on a 0.55% growth in GDP in the second quarter of the year.
