Southwest States consider reopening schools for 2019/2020 WAEC examinations

Six states of the Southwest including, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti may have started preparations to reopen schools next month to enable eligible students sit for the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The resolution which is in contradiction with the earlier directive of the Federal Government, stating that all schools suspend plans to recall graduating pupils for WASSCE; was reportedly reached at a virtual meeting initiated by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) in collaboration with the Forum of South-West Education Commissioners, Special Advisers on Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board Chairmen.

“At the least, August 3rd, resumption for final year SSS3 students, states should approach the Federal Government at the first instance seeking the postponement of the WAEC exam by at least three weeks from proposed resumption. At the second instance states should directly approach WAEC to seek for an extension of the WAEC Examinations to week commencing August 24.”  part of the statement by Seye Oyeleye, Director-General of DAWN read.

Twitter, after an embargo on tweets from all verified accounts, has revealed was “a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools.” It is a lesson to all that in this continually advancing internet age; individuals must be more cautious in avoiding fraud antics.


Okonjo-Iweala: What I would say to the US president as WTO DG

Former Managing Director of the World Bank, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, revealed what she would say to the United States President if she is appointed Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

In a speech at the WTO headquarter in Geneva, Okonjo-Iweala declared that she would convince the US President or President-Elect not to leave the WTO; stating the WTO has benefited all countries including the United States.

“It is because of the multilateral rules-based trading system that we have had prosperity and lifting of millions out of poverty, and it’s been shared prosperity…We want peace, security, and stability. That is why the WTO is needed, with its ability to arbitrate disputes within members” she added.


Magu released on bail, 12 EFCC officers suspended

The former acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, was given a little respite and released on bail after spending ten days in custody for interrogation.

The Presidential panel led by Justice Ayo Salami, investigating allegations levelled against Magu by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, issued the release of the suspended chairman on Wednesday night.

In addition, President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the suspension of 12 directors of the EFCC, including the commission’s Secretary, Olanipekun Olukoyede.
