Obafemi Awolowo University officials ‘to ban’ Student Union

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is now making furious, desperate steps to proscribe the Students’ Union over a headlong protest they have staged against the and draconian sudden hikes introduced in their tuition.

Saharareporters learned today of the management’s plan to “digress students’ resistance” against the rejected fees regime.

Our correspondent also learned that the Vice University Chancellor, Professor Bamitale Omole, has sent security agents to scout for, and arrest, any member of the Students’ Union executive for their roles in daring to mobilize the students against the announcement of increased fees.  Read more….

Soldiers stop and search Tambuwal in Kaduna

Soldiers attached to the venue of the international conference on ‘Security and Development Challenges of Pastorialism in West and Central Africa’ on Monday harassed the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and held him hostage for a few minutes, insisting on searching his official car before he was allowed entrance into the venue of the conference.

The Speaker, who arrived the venue of the conference at 9.16 am ahead of other VIPs, was stopped from gaining immediate access into the hotel premises by the soldiers even when the seal of his office was conspicuous. Read more….

Naira appreciates against pound, dollar at forex

The Naira on Monday appreciated against the Pound Sterling and the dollar at the three segments of the foreign exchange market.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Naira traded at N282 against the Pound Sterling as against N284 which it traded on June 20 at the Bureau De Change (BDCs).

At the official market, the currency sold for N261.54 to the Pound Sterling, the exchange it was since last Friday. Read more….

Fashola swears in new Special Adviser

Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on  Monday restated the commitment of his administration to efficient service delivery in the state.

Fashola made the pledge at the administration of oath of office on Mr Folorunsho Folarin- Coker, the new Special Adviser on Central Business District (CBD).

NDLEA arrests 218 persons in Akwa Ibom

The NDLEA in Akwa Ibom says it has arrested 218 persons for trafficking in hard drugs and psychotropic substances since January.

The state’s Commander of the agency, Mrs Josephine Obi, disclosed this in Uyo on Monday while briefing newsmen on activities to mark this year’s World Drug-Free Day scheduled for Thursday.

She said of the 218 arrested suspects, 203 were males while 15 were females. Read more….
