Singer Jamelia is fighting against racial prejudice in the UK

Singer Jamelia has been campaigning for the presence of more black dolls in the market. It is not the first time the 36-year-old (real name Jamelia Niela Davis ) has tackled the issue of racial prejudice in the UK, in fact she’s been more vocal about segregation in recent times. In January, she took to Twitter to call out a fellow passenger on a train who asked to see her and her 11-year-old daughter Tiani’s ticket confronting them for sitting in first class on a train.

Born to a Zimbabwean father, Jamelia first got signed at the age of 15 to Capitol Records. Her debut album, “Drama” dropped in 2000 and hits like “Money”, “Call Me” and “The Boy Next Door” made her a star. Her second studio album, “Thank You” was released in 2003 and singles from the album “Superstar” and “Thank You” were the tunes that brought her A-List fame and a BPI certification peaking at number three. She’s won a MOBO Award for Best Single in 2004, another MOBO Award for Best Video and a Q Award for Best Single. Jamelia received five BRIT Award nominations in 2004 and 2005 for Best British Female, Best British Single, Best Female Solo Act, and Best British Urban Act all for Thank You” and has graced the cover of magazines from Cosmopolitan, Company to Elle and Harpers & Queen.

I remember attending the Pride of Britain Awards with straightened hair in a short. But even though I had everything on show, I was hiding the real me,” Jamelia told Daily Mail. “Now, I’m much more comfortable being myself. I felt fabulous when I went to the same awards last year in a knee-length dress with my Afro out. As I’ve got older, I think sexy is about leaving something to the imagination. It has a lot to do with having daughters: my eldest is 16 this month, and I am conscious of how she sells herself. I want to be the best role model I can.”

Since controversially leaving the Loose Women show in October 2016, Jamelia has been working on other projects for the ITV channel and on launching her own TV channel, JameliaDotcom. Jamelia
