Signs of the times: Why more resignations could force Trump’s hand

by Alexander O. Onukwue

As the elected 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump’s tenure should not end before the 20th of January, 2021. But there have been projections since he took office this year that he would not even still be President by this Christmas.

Some other predictions actually give him until July, or August of this year. Those who make these projections have relied on some of the scandals arising from the revelations about Trump’s campaign collusion with Russia, or his obstruction of justice in the investigations into the 2016 elections.

The fact of the matter is that Trump has not come any closer to being impeached or declared unfit for his position as Nigerians are to be assured of the date for restructuring. His fate, commentators say, are almost solely in the hands of Republican members of Congress who would have to disown him first for any proceedings of impeachment to have any substantial value.

That notwithstanding, there must be some element of discomfort to Trump when people in his camp begin to decline their positions by way of resignations. Sean Spicer is the latest person to do so, and his is significant because he had no dark cloud hanging over him to demand a resignation; he left on a matter of principle.

Trump’s show of strength and defiance of criticism from the media was supported by persons like Spicer as Press Secretary and for him to go means other Trump supporters can also disagree much with him to withdraw their services. He may not show it but that would be a worry for the President.

It would either lead him to amend and listen more, or he will inevitably lose to many allies and may ponder giving up the job at some point.
