Since emerging as the president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki has been trailed by fraud charges and embezzlement especially during his tenure as governor of Kwara, a position he occupied from 2003 to 2011. Following a renewed move by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the Senate president, Saraki has said that the commission is welcome to do so, saying it’s politically motivated and all a witch hunt.
Furthermore, Saraki said the anti-graft agency was only investigating matters that were already. In a letter to the Kwara State Government, the EFCC demanded a breakdown of Saraki’s income, as well as his entitlements as governor of the state. EFCC is investigating Saraki for an alleged case of conspiracy, abuse of office, misappropriation of public funds, theft, and money-laundering.
Saraki has been embroiled in different corruption cases both in the country and internationally, together with his wife’s activites, detailed in the Panama Papers and Paradise Papers, a global investigation revealing top corrupt office holders in the world.
