Rubbin’ Minds’ #IWMSpecial powered by Lipton: Should we go easy on this ‘gender thing’?

‘I want to challenge women. Let’s go easy on the gender thing. The only difference is the physiology Ambassador Folake Marcus Bello on Rubin Mind’s International Women’s Month special powered by Lipton.

On this very special episode, show host, Bolanle Olukanni sits with Nigeria’s former ambassador to Zambia and Malawi as they discuss the progress of women from her time when she held outstanding positions and presented herself as a leader for women to the time where women are now, by themselves coming out to take power on their own terms.

Where there is visible progress in the fight for gender equality and the recognition of women as candidates for powerful position, Folake states that the present day generation is lucky to have found a voice to speak for themselves. Women in her time were very conscious enough in making certain decisions as there were certain things that were just considered abnormal of a woman. And for a woman to make or do these abnormal things, she had to be ready for what follows after.

“Now your lucky, your generation is lucky. Women can come out and be whoever they want to. In my generation in the 80’s you still had to have a certain standard of behaviour as expected of a woman,” she said about the progress in gender quality and perception.

However, in modern time, women are challenging these behavioural expectations by being very vocal about their demands. Folake, however, states that if the world, men and women can refuse to see gender, the world will be a better place.

The show went on to host veteran Nollywood actress, Joke Silva in a discussion about the evolution of Nollywood as it affects women.

“I think in some areas the industry has evolved forward and in some cases, it has evolved backwards” Joke Silva speaks on Nollywood.

Joke Silva also believes that Nollywood have helped in the progress of portraying women for what they are rather than what society makes of them. We now have movies that shows women handling powerful positions and women taking up lead roles in movies. One problem she expresses however, is that it is quiet hard to convince society with some contents.

“One is the fact that there is this stereotyping of women. We are either witches, hoes, saints or sinners” Joke Silva on Rubin Minds.
