INEC says total accredited voters in Rivers election was inflated by 1 million

A representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission, has testified that only 293,072 persons were accredited to vote during the April 11 gubernatorial polls in Rivers state.

The INEC official, Abimbola Oladunjoye, made the disclosure to the Rivers State governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja.

When the election results came out, INEC said there were a total of 2,079, 231 registered voters.

The Returning Officer and Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Faraday Osasere Oruwese, said a total of 1,228, 614 voters were accredited while the total number of votes cast stood at 1,187, 295.

Wike was declared winner, with a total of 1,029, 102 votes, while Dakuku Peterside polled a total of 124,896 votes.

Oladunjoye’s testimony to the Justice Suleiman Ambrosa-led tribunal, was however different from the figure that was earlier given.

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, Oladunjoye who the Deputy Director in charge of INEC ICT and Database, stated that based on the available data, “the total number of accredited voters for the governorship election in River State were 293,072”.

She however, added that it was “possible all the results were not uploaded having followed the order from INEC that servers were to be shut down after six weeks”.
