Republican Healthcare bill collapses | Trump calls for “clean slate”

The Republican healthcare bill suffered a huge blow after a second attempt to pass a bill in the Senate collapsed late on Monday, when two more Republican Senators joined the opposition.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement,”Regretfully, it is now apparent that the effort to repeal and immediately replace the failure of Obamacare will not be successful”, Reuters reports.

Two Senate conservatives, Republican Mike Lee and Jerry Moran announced just hours earlier that they would not support the latest version of legislation to repeal portions of Obamacare leaving McConnell short of the required votes to pass the bill.

President Trump had called on Republicans on Twitter to simply repeal Obamacare and start working on a brand new health care plan before McConnell’s statement was released.

This is a huge setback for Trump’s administration, after making it one if the pillars of his campaign and promising to repeal and replace Obamacare as soon as he became President. The administration has failed to win any major legislative initiative since he assumed office.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has determined that the various versions of Republican healthcare legislation would result in anywhere from 18 million to 23 million people losing their healthcare.

McConnell pushed the presidents approach and announced that he would try to bring legislation to repeal Obamacare to the Senate floor in coming days.
