From Reality TV to Reality Twitter: Our mumu never really do

BBNaija

by Alexander O. Onukwue

Are Nigeria’s politicians pleased to see the youth deep in distractions while the country runs adrift?

While you make your mind up, think about an alternative question: Have politicians purposely suppressed education in the country so that the people will not be enlightened enough to know what to demand of them?

It would be reasonable to suggest that the answers to both question are the same, but don’t worry if you score 50%. It means there is definitely a problem somewhere, and either one is bad enough.

Young people in Nigeria are, for the most part, not interested much for what happens with the government. Persons under 35 have spent the better parts of their adult lives within the democratic dispensation, listening to promise after promise from politicians and public office holders. The early post-Military ginger of their teenage years for a country to be proud of, have given way to the adoption of new heroes from outside of Government who can provide immediate comfort and satisfaction from the disappointments. So that comedians, musicians and all performers of public entertainment are now the de facto role models and leaders as far as most young persons are concerned.

That was the case with BBNaija between January and March, the entire period of President Buhari’s first London vacation. The President was supposed to be away for a definite period but when it got extended, there was no outrage by most “influencers” as they were mostly hooked on reality TV, not caring much for anything else. Now in July, the President has remained away from the country on an indefinite break, and the leaders of tomorrow are consumed with reality Twitter.

Wizkid, Davido and Alhaji Tekno are providing the latest dose of entertainment to keep the youth away from the frustration that comes with thinking about what goes on in the Government. This particular diss is surely not going to last as long as BBNaija did but it is more like a new episode of a series that involves different actors; the last episode featured Hushpuppi, KCee, and Phyno. At least the script for that was about taxable income, which is somewhat governance-related.

As the dust on this settles, the question now is what the next episode will be about, and which artistes will feature. Well done viewers, stay tuned for scenes from our next episode.
