So this photo of Zahra Buhari and her “O.B.O” husband, Ahmed Indimi alighting from one of the Nigerian official jets has been trending all day – but sadly, not to critical acclaim.

Nigerians are pissed that the first daughter and the first son-in-law might be appropriating state resources for their personal travels and I’m here thinking: “why y’all mad though”?

Okay, I get it. Two unelected officials are seen alighting from a jet paid for by taxpayers’ money for a reason that is unrelated to any State business, at least as far as anyone knows right now.

I get it. It screams abuse of office.

Okay.

So what? Is it today that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation awarded a phantom government contract to a company linked to him? Or is it today that civil servants and public service holders just started turning government offices to their personal marketplace?

More to the point, is your daddy the President? You people will not allow the girl and bae enjoy their share of the national cake in peace abi.

On a more serious note though, if it turns out to be true that this couple used the Presidential jet for a travel that has nothing to do with State business – and practically, there is no way they have any business dealing with State matters since neither occupies any political office by election or appointment – then it is all manners of wrong! Not only did they exploit a position of trust, they also flaunted it.

It’s an ethical compromise for which all of her father’s promise of being a man of modesty and integrity can now be called to question. If this is what they are comfortable flaunting on social media, then why should we not call to question the expenses of the first family in the past two years since the administration came into office?

Should we not be asking if truly the celebrity wedding the two had last year was not funded with State money/resources?

Should we not be asking if all of those expensive accessories that Mrs Aisha Buhari flaunts were not obtained using State money?

When Kellyanne Conway, a White House adviser, made the mistake of endorsing Ivanka Trump’s Nordstrom line on national TV, it was like the apocalypse in America. The involvement of the public was not just about Twitter fury. It was a battle cry for her removal and the success came when the White House relegated the position in government. Or when last did you hear about her?

We mustn’t limit the fury to Twitter and then move on. We must ensure that they account for what business they had travelling on State-owned property.
