[The Presidential Blog] What unemployment? N-Power portal is apparently popping

The Federal Government’s Social Investment Programme, N-Power, has the ambitious goal to hire 350,000 unemployed graduates.

The process for application is done through a portal which was first opened on the 11th of June, 2016. At that time, 35 million applicants got on the portal within 36 hours. 400,000 applicants got successful last year during that first process.

Things got a little murky after that because it became unclear what the fate of these successful applicants were. Had they been meaningfully employed? Were they just hanging somewhere? This was compounded by the fact that the President requested appropriation of over N150 billion in the 2017 budget for the scheme.

It was finally announced that the N-Power portal will be reopened for registration on the 9th of June by the 13th (that’s three days ago).

As at today, the N-Power Twitter handle says there have been over 200,000 application received via the portal in three days.

240,393 applications in three days? And over 40,000 of applied for agricultural jobs?

It’s hard to doubt considering the unemployment figures released last week by the Statistician General, Yemi Kale.

Really interested in meeting some of these applicants.
