[The Presidential Blog] Is this why the Minister of Communications has been AWOL?

Quick question: did you know that Nigeria has a Minister of Communications?

You probably did not and that’s okay. Sometimes we forget too.

Nigeria has a Minister of Communications named Adebayo Shittu. The most notable he’s been since he was appointed in 2015 was during the MTN $5.3 billion/$3.8 billion fine saga when he snubbed the House of Representatives’ summons. He also made a brief cameo later in 2016 when the NCC attempted to run mad by increasing data tariffs.

To be completely fair, he also has a robust Twitter account where he posts his activities but they are not the kind of posts that actually announce that anything significant is happening in that Ministry.

Today, we learnt that Mr Shittu may be making plans ahead of 2019 to run for governorship in his home State, Oyo.

Daily Post published an article on Sunday highlighting the candidates who they have found to be racing for the Oyo governorship in 2019 to succeed Governor Ajimobi. According to the article, Daily Post reliably gathered that “no fewer than 30 aspirants from various political divide have so far indicated interest to contest the governorship seat in Oyo State” and the Minister is one of them.

Well, if he truly is, that may explain why we rarely hear about him on national issues. Tryin to contest an election in Nigeria is mostly a full-time job.
