[The Presidential Blog]: We like ‘this’ Obasanjo

In the wake of the judiciary crisis that rocked half a dozen cities in Nigeria on Saturday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Buhari held a closed door meeting in Abuja yesterday.

Reports say the meeting was held behind the closed doors of the President’s office at the Villa and lasted less than an hour.

I reckon the time was enough for some serious “what-were-you-thinking” talk. Everyone knows we need the judiciary to be clean and waiting on the National Judicial Commission to drag the investigation of the concerned members of the Bench and then still not satisfy our thirst for appropriate retribution. That is certain. What we do not know and what we need to be assured of is that in cleaning the judiciary up, the Presidency knows what it is actually doing.

For example, that this won’t be a repeat of the Dasuki matter where the same FG allowed the matter be assigned to Justice Ademola (one of the seven judges now being accused of corruption). And that the Police, EFCC, DSS or whatever body in charge has actually concluded investigations against the Justices before a charge is brought against them or that the same matter is not instituted in another court -or whichever excuse for the discharge of Saraki, Ekweremadu and co works for you.

As citizens, we also want to feel safe and secured enough to know that our doors won’t be broken down in the middle of the night by fully armed men without constitutionally backed reasons.

All in all, whatever was discussed behind closed doors, one has to admit that this is the kind of advisory role we love to see former President Obasanjo playing.

Whatever our grouse against him, this is the President Olusegun Obasanjo and he remains the man who chaperoned us from military to democratic rule and by whatever questionable means, ensured that President after President for 16 years was democratically elected.

Olusegun Obasanjo is not the best of them but he is efficient. And efficient is just the thing that this administration needs.

Except if this was just a catch-up session? One never knows with this PMB.
