[The Presidential Blog] Our diagnosis of President Buhari’s “immobile” left hand came up inconclusive

On Friday, the Archbishop of Cantebury, Justin Welby met with President Buhari in his London (medical) vacation home. It’s the second time that the clergyman has paid the Nigerian President a visit this year. The first visit was under similar circumstances on the 9th of March while the President was in the UK for his first medical trip in 2017.

Presumably, the two have some type of friendship going on and so this visit – like those by others before it – shouldn’t even be remarkable. But the comments that trailed it have made us take a second look (more than that as you’ll soon learn).

Some Nigerians are of the opinion that the President has an immobile left hand that must have resulted from a stroke he suffered due to chemotherapy. Quite ludicrous if you consider the fact that this diagnosis is based off a photograph.

This one:

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Cantebury met with convalescing President Buhari on Friday. It was his second visit to the Nigerian President and this raised some questions.

So we decided one picture should not be enough to make a conclusive finding on the immobility of Buhari’s hand. Below are “recent” photos of the subject – all showing the affected area. Let’s get critical:

Here you see Buhari shaking the Constituted Authority Governor Ajimobi of Oyo with his right hand while his left hangs at an angle with the phalanges pointing downward.

For good measure, a not-sleeping Governor Ganduje also seems to be shaking his own left hand. Need a fidget-spinner much?

As he laughs with Mr. God-punished-my-people-with-meningitis Yari about something Borno’s Shettima doesn’t find the least bit funny, we see President Buhari’s left hand seemingly mid-motion but still held at an angle.

In what can only be moments before or after the previous photo was taken, we see the left hand perched in the same manner as in the photo with Archbishop of Canterbury except the fingers are outstretched here.

And finally, this photo from the Last Supper (he shared with APC governors). He and Nasir El Rufai appear to be the only one not eating but while we see both of your next President the Kaduna Governor’s hands, we see none of Buhari’s.

We hate to break it to you but despite our efforts, this test has been inconclusive. We have failed to determine the immobility of President Buhari’s left hand using the above photos. The good news though is that we were able to determine that the fingers of the left hand are pretty mobile.

While we develop a new series of tests to determine the real state of our President’s left hand, we leave the floor open for all of your speculations. Leave them in the comments.
