President Trump to ban travel to Cuba and stop dealings with Cuban military

President Trump will on Friday announce his plans to ban Americans traveling to Cuba for tourism purposes and also clamp down on business dealings of the United States with Cuban military,  fulfilling one of his campaign promises.

According to a draft, the ban would institute a broad prohibition on any financial transactions with companies and organizations controlled by the government’s military. Trump would announce the Cuba policy during a speech in Miami and issues orders that would reverse some of the regulations Obama had introduced in 2014.

An excerpt from the draft of the Presidential Policy Directive, it reads; “My administration’s policy will be guided by key U.S. national security interests and solidarity with the Cuban people, I will seek to promote a stable, prosperous, and free country for the Cuban people. To that end, we must ensure that U.S. funds are not channeled to a regime that has failed to meet the most basic requirements of a free and just society”, Politico reports.

The policy is a bid for Trump, to fulfill a campaign promise made, the policy will enforce a long-term ban on Americans traveling to Cuba as tourists and seeks to prevent dollars from funding Trump’s  administration sees as a repressive military-dominated government.

The new policy also bans any business transactions with the Armed Forces Business Enterprises Group (GAESA), but with some exceptions, including air and sea travel, shielding U.S. airlines and cruise ship companies now serving the island. The policy however, Trump will not shut down any embassies or cut off the recently resumed direct U.S.-Cuba commercial flights – though his more restrictive policy seems certain to dampen new economic ties.
