President Trump gets $1.6bn requested to begin construction of Mexico border wall

Amid the negative press, President Donald Trump has been receiving since he returned from his G-20 summit trip and the present confusion surrounding his son Donald Trump Jr., this is a win for the White House.

Trump tweeted early Thursday the “big win”, he wrote; “Big WIN today for building the wall. It will secure the border & save lives. Now the full House & Senate must act!”.

In March, Department of Homeland Security released justification documents to support the President’s border wall budget. The first $1 billion of border wall funding would be to cover 62 miles including the replacement of existing fencing along the southern border. The $999 million the White House requested in its budget supplement for just defense and border security spending would cover only 48 miles of new wall, according to justification documents from the Department of Homeland Security obtained by CNN in March.

The money will fund 14 miles of new border wall in San Diego, 28 miles of new levee wall barriers and six miles of new border wall in the Rio Grande Valley region and 14 miles of replacement fencing in San Diego.

At a campaign rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in June, President Trump proposed building a “solar wall” on the Mexican border that would pay for itself by generating electricity.

“We’re thinking of something that’s unique, we’re talking about the southern border. Lots of sun, lots of heat”. “We’re thinking about building the wall as a solar wall, so it creates energy, and pays for itself. And this way Mexico will have to pay much less money, and that’s good. Is that good?” he said.
