The week that just ran by was crammed with a lot of political activities, so many that it was almost difficult to keep up. From President Muhammadu Buhari’s attendance at the 71st United Nations General Assembly, his bilateral meetings with President Barack Obama, French President Francois Hollande and South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma. How can we forget former First Lady, Patience Jonathan’s money problems with the EFCC?

Also, the debate surrounding the proposed sale of national assets kick-started by billionaire, Aliko Dangote has been followed by dissenting views and what nots. Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung also somehow made it to headlines but for nothing more than the Rio Olympics that is long forgotten amongst sports lovers. We’ve all moved on to the EPL and Manchester United’s newest signing, Pogba has finally proven himself worthy of the £89 million spent on him.

We’ve established that most of the news stories from last week cannot be ignored but here are the winners and losers from all the events put together:

WINNERS

President Muhammadu Buhari: In his review of his performance and the turn out of events at the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Buhari declared his outing as successful. Who are we not to agree with him? This is why he tops the list of the winners for last week. While in the United States, President Buhari met with 15 Nigerian professionals whom he briefed on the situation of the country and urged to return home to collectively save the nation from further crisis. One major achievement, however, was the $391 million pledge the President was able to get from the United Kingdom and the United States as humanitarian aid for the Lake Chad region. The President mentioned the plight of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North-East and the steps taken to settle IDPs in homes over the coming years. He also called for permanent membership for Africa on the UN Security Council, stressing that it would reflect fair representation and greater transparency.

Arsenal: English league football lovers, especially Chelsea fans were left in shock after their 3-0 loss to Arsenal on Saturday. Arsenal fans are so excited about their spectacular win that some are hopeful that the team may actually have a chance at clinching this year’s title. This is not farfetched as they beat Hull City 4-1 in a previous game. So we hope they will make winning a norm, otherwise its back to losers gang.

Abubakar Shekau: Pardon our seeming disloyalty to the Nigerian cause but Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau is back and “fine”. Just one month after the Nigerian army revealed that Shekau had been “fatally wounded on the shoulder” in an airstrike, the terrorist group released a new video that featured their supposedly wounded soldier. As usual, he had a message for Nigerians and the government and he maintains the stance of the group on the release of the kidnapped Chibok girls: release our members and you get your girls.

LOSERS

Patience Jonathan: The former First Lady has maintained her position on the losers list for the third week in a row and it remains about the controversial $15 million she’s openly claimed ownership of. Last week, Dame Patience Jonathan proved she could no longer the take the harassment from the EFCC when she threatened to file a N5 billion suit if the agency fails to defreeze her bank account. Her threat notwithstanding, EFCC has been able to establish a money laundering case against Mrs Jonathan and despite the massive backlash from various pro-Jonathan groups, we might be seeing the Dame in the courts real soon.

Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin: You’d think we would have moved on from the budget padding scandal but no. At the plenary session that marked the resumption of the House of Reps from its recess, Hon Jibrin was referred to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for investigation. The man seems to have shot himself in the foot as all his efforts to prove the Speaker, Hon Yakubu Dogara guilty have backfired. However, Hon Jibrin has snubbed the Ethics Committee on two separate occasions and he has stayed relatively quiet about the matter so far, except the time he said he would only attend the investigation panel if its done publicly.
