His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI today appointed his Lordship, Most Rev Joseph Effiong Ekuwem as the new Archbishop of Calabar.

Ekuwem was until his appointment the Bishop of Uyo Diocese.

Most Rev Joseph Effiong Ekuwem replaces His Grace Most Rev Joseph Edra Ukpo who retired having attained the canonical age of 75.

According to reports, the Pope also appointed His Grace Most Rev Joseph Ukpo as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Calabar until the newly appointed Archbishop is installed.
