Pastor faces trial for helping his gay son get married (PICTURED)

There is no denying that the Rev. Frank Shaefer loves his son.  The pastor is in big trouble for that love, but he doesn’t seem to have any regrets.  The pastor officiated his son’s gay marriage  ”because I love him so much and didn’t want to deny him that joy.”

But the pastor is in trouble for violating Methodist law, leading the pastor to be forced to appear in a church trial in Pennsylvania.  The 51-year old man is accused of breaking his vows as a pastor by conducting the ceremony, which took place in Massachusetts.  The church accepts members of the gay community, but does not condone their marriages.

The pastor says that he is not one to be punished, for he believes he is following the word of God.

“If I am charged to minister to all people, regardless of who they are and what they are, then it should be just so,” he said.

Hundreds of other ministers are supporting the pastor, and this appears to be a serious issue that has thus far divided the church.   The trial is set to begin in late November.

Those who support the church say that the pastor is wrong to take the law into his own hands rather than allowing the democratic system of the Methodist Church to do its work.

Rebellious clergy “have decided to take the law into their own hands, so to speak, and go ahead and violate the requirements of our (Book of) Discipline,” said Rev. Thomas A Lancbrecht, vice president and general manager of Good News, a Methodist group.

But the pastor is standing firm toward those who think he was wrong for helping his son to get married.  He says that God made him the way that he is.

“If that’s the case, this is the way God made him,” Schaefer said. “This is the way he was created, as a homosexual.”
