Olamide’s Wonma video has sparked conversations against the sexualization of nurses

For the sake of clarity, artists and creatives are entitled to bringing their full creativity to light. That said, freedom of expression should not be equal to asinine innuendos and problematic imagery. For as long as time, music has always had an influence on public conditioning. Music artists in recent times have also been considered as culture curators and trendsetters. With their influence, it is only appropriate that they use their voice to promote things that everyone can be proud of. However, half the time, the reverse is not usually the case.

Olamide released his 9th studio project 999 in February, reinforcing his title as the king of the streets. However, the artist is facing backlash over the release of the music video of Wonma, a raunchy spectacle that feeds into the hypersexualisation of nurses.

The video has riled up people, especially nurses who shared that the profession already suffers a certain stereotype associated to it as it concerns sexual fantasies and fetishes.

Wonma itself holds a derogatory meaning, as it talks about how women can’t be faithful to one man. Olamide, in this song argues that no matter what a man does to please and keep a woman, she would end up sleeping with another man. Shot by Clarence Peters, the video further expressed what the lyrics of the song resonate with.

The explicit nature of the video is not really many have raised concerns about, since it’s labelled 18+ which indicates for adults-only. Nigerians are also berating the rapper for the lack of creativity that accompanied the video, and importantly the sexualization of the nursing profession.

In another way, popular comedian Lasisi Elenu in his recent skit also came under fire for stereotyping nurses as lower than doctors, an age-old belief that has pervaded societal thinking. Popular media like Hollywood and the adult entertainment industry at large have entrenched these sexual imagery of nurses, flattening the profession to outlets for male-centered gratification.

While a few people have debated that the video doesn’t mean much, others have expressed their disappointment in Olamide, urging him to release an apology.
