Okonjo-Iweala hit at govs over ‘misuse’ of monthly allocation

The coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, has hit at state governors over what she described as ‘misuse’ of the monthly budgetary allocation they get from the federation account.

The minister who spoke Sunday, at the 12th Convocation of Babcock University, BU, Ilishan Remo, where over 1, 544 students graduated, said basic public services such as education, health and agriculture falls under the concurrent list, but wonders why citizens always blame the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan for the failings of some state governments, who get monthly allocation larger than countries like Liberia, Gambia and the Republic of Benin. Nigeria implicated in fresh match-fixing scandal

Nigeria has been implicated in yet another football match-fixing scandal, with the revelation that the friendly match between the Super Eagles and North Korea on the eve of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was doctored.

The allegation, published by the New York Times, opens a fresh can of worms in a series of claims that Nigeria has featured prominently for years in the dubious art match-rigging.

APC wins Yobe bye-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Saidu Baba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the bye-election into the Yobe House of Assembly.

INEC had on Saturday conducted a bye-election to fill the vacant Nangere constituency seat, following the death of Adamu Degubi.

Degubi was killed by unknown gunmen in June 2012. Read more….

Boxing champion dies in swimming pool

A boxing medalist at the just-concluded Ibile Games, Mujib Philips, died on Saturday in a swimming pool at the Mobolaji Johnson sports centre, Rowe Park in Yaba, Lagos.

It was reported that Philips died during the Boxing Hall of Fame championship event which holds every last Saturday of the month.

Philips won a gold medal at the Ibile Games, hosted by the Lagos State Government to showcase talented athletes in Local Governments Areas in the state. Read more….

NSCDC prosecutes 50 offenders in Akwa Ibom

The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Akwa Ibom, Pedro Ideba, said the command prosecuted 50 offenders in the state in the first quarter of the year.

Mr. Ideba said the offences bordered on oil theft and destruction of oil installations among others, insisting that the command would not relent in fighting criminal activities in the state. Read more….
