Is Obiano looking over his shoulder anxiously?

by Alexander O. Onukwue

Willie Obinao, the Anambra State Governor seeking re-election by November, is not amused by the comments credited to APC Chairman, Odigie Oyegun, which advise him, Obiano, to start preparing his handover notes.

As campaigns get hotter in anticipation of the elections, the fire is being stoked by all interested parties to unsettle their rivals. Obiano is expected to face competition for his place in the Government House in Awka from the PDP and APC, while other parties like the UPP have a known aspirant in Chief Osita Chidoka, a former Minister of Aviation and Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Responding to Oyegun’s remarks, Obiano described it as “a clear threat to Nigeria’s democracy and security in Anambra State.”

“We have it on good authority that they have been working at various options including an attempt to foment insecurity in the state to pave way for a state of emergency as a prelude to their take-over. What this requires is that Anambra people and Nigerians in general, especially lovers of democracy and good governance should be alert.”

It appears to be the usual response given by parties who are not in alliance with the ruling party, whereby the party, in this case APGA, alleges that the Federal power wishes to manipulate the elections against it.

However, Obiano has found himself in a bit of a tighter situation going into the period of the polls, with the recent incident at Ozubulu. Though not directly attributed as a fault of the Anambra State Government, it has made the Governor and his control of the State a little less assured than he would have wanted.

For what it’s worth, Obiano’s “good authority” on attempts to foment security by the APC may just be expressions of pre-election jitters from the sitting Governor.
