The Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ade Abolurin, was almost shot on Friday, 22 August, in Ikorodu, Lagos by an overzealous police officer, while carrying out an anti-vandalism inspection.

According to a spokesperson for the corps, Emmanuel Okeh, the NSCDC boss was challenged during an inspection of a vandal site, by a police inspector, who threatened to open fire on his team for coming to carry out the checks.

The civil defence boss chairs the inspection team of officials from the army, the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and the Office of the Attorney-General, who are members of a committee on anti-vandalism constituted by the government.

Okeh stated that the incident occured after the arrest of suspected vandals and oil thieves who were in possession of petroleum products in jerry cans. The apprehended vandals contacted the police, who subsequently arrived the scene in a danfo bus.

According to him, the police inspector challenged Abolurin with an AK47 riffle, telling him that the police was in charge, and he had no business visiting the site. After which the other members of the committee tried to caution the officer, but their attempts were futile.

However, the police has denied that its officers attacked or threatened the commandant-general.

A spokesperson for the Lagos State police, Lelme Kolle, said it could not be true that a police officer would attack a convoy of armed civil defence personnel and soldiers.

He said, “It is a complete lie. It is not true. It is a concocted story.”

Kolle said a police anti-vandalism team only stopped a convoy of 10 cars that was headed to the site to inquire if they had police clearance to visit the site.
