NLC, TUC suspend nationwide strike; NNPC, PPPRA may be scrapped in new PIB | 5 Things That Should Matter Today

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have suspended the strike that was scheduled to commence on Monday.

After an exhaustive meeting with the Federal Government which started at 8.30pm on Sunday and ended at 2:50am Monday morning, an agreement was reached to suspend the application of the cost-reflective electricity tariff adjustments for two weeks.

Labour and Employment Minister, Chris Ngige, read a communique announcing the decision reached by both parties. It stated that a Technical Committee comprising Labour leaders, Government agencies and Ministries will in two weeks look into issues concerning the recent electricity tariff hike, so as to validate “the basis for the new cost-reflective tariff as a result of the conflicting information from the fields which appeared different from the data presented to justify the new policy by NERC; metering deployment, challenges, timeline for massive rollout.”


Buhari submits PIB to National Assembly, scraps NNPC, PPPRA in new bill

President Muhammadu Buhari has transmitted the much-awaited Petroleum Industry Bill 2020 to the National Assembly, proposing the creation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company.

According to Punch reports, the bill also proposes the scrapping of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency. Adding that the NNPC Limited will be incorporated by the Minister of Petroleum, who together with his finance counterparts, will determine NNPC’s assets and liabilities that will be inherited by the new firm.

The bill also introduces the establishment of an agency known as the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission which will be responsible for the technical and commercial regulation of upstream petroleum operations.


Boko Haram terrorists attack Borno Governor’s convoy- again

Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, and his convoy had come under Boko Haram terrorists’ attack again barely 48 hours after the terrorist group had ambushed the governor’s convoy along Cross Kauwa-Baga Road.

Zulum’s convoy was attacked along Monguno-Maiduguri axis on Sunday evening; resulting in one injured soldier.

The attack is coming barely 48 hours after the attack on the governor’s convoy along Cross Kauwa-Baga Road which left over 30 people dead including 10 policemen and four soldiers.


Laycon is crowned winner of Big Brother Naija Lockdown Season 5

Olamilekan Agbeleshe, fondly known as Laycon, has emerged winner of popular reality TV show, Big Brother Naija Season 5.

The young rapper beat 19 other housemates to be crowned the winner of this year’s reality television show. In the second and first runner-up spots were Nengi and Dorathy respectively. Laycon goes home with prizes worth N85million, inclusive of a N30 million cash prize.
