Its official, Netflix is finally convinced that original African content, featuring African talent, scripted and produced by African talent will not only find an audience on the continent, but will also draw global interest. They have recently announced they are commissioning a second season of the progressive YA surburban youth drama ‘Blood & Water‘, which premiered in May to rave reviews and essentially catapulted its stars into African superstardom.
Directed by South African show runner Nosipho Dumisa and produced by Gambit Films led by Bradley Joshua and Benjamin Overmeyer as producers, ‘Blood & Water’ did a fantastical job of cramming a complex network of young relationships and intrigue into six episodes. This was also a feature of South Africa’s other Netflix Original, Queen Sono. It suggests for the most part, that Netflix at the time saw original content from the continent as a tentative experiment with episode caps. It was then up to the cast and crew to make something of these cramped episodes, and that they did.
The second season of the teen drama series, “Blood & Water”, will see Puleng and Fikile deal with the consequences of their explosive confrontation as more mystery and drama unfolds.
“Blood & Water” stars breakout star Khosi Ngema as well as experienced known talent, Ama Qamata (“Gemora“, “My Perfect Family“, “Rhythm City“), Natasha Thahane (“Skeem Saam“, “The Queen“), Gail Mabalane (“The Road“, “The Wild“), Cindy Mahlangu (“The Queen“, “The Herd“), Thabang Molaba (“The Queen“), Arno Greeff (“Binnelanders“) and Dillon Windvogel (“DanZ“).
With established and new faces, and buzz around Ama Qamata and Thabang Molaba, who has become an instant sex symbol, Netflix will seek to capitalize on the buzz and clamour for more episodes with a potentially longer second season.
