NBA to Buhari: Don’t intimidate the Judiciary

The president of the Nigerian Bar Association, Augustine Alegeh, has criticised the federal government over the recent statements that the judiciary is impeding the anti-corruption war.

The top lawyer stated this while speaking at a valedictory session in honor of retiring Supreme Court justice, Justice Mohammed Muntaka-Coomassie.

Alegeh said: “The NBA condemns in its entirety the generalisation and/or categorisation of the Judiciary as being corrupt and an impediment to the zero corruption policy of the present administration.”

While noting that there are some bad eggs in the justice system, lumping the entire judiciary as corrupt is a wrong misconception and an overt attempt to coerce the judiciary, an act which will not be tolerated, Alegeh had said.

It would be recalled that the presidency had severally criticized the judiciary, saying that it was his biggest “headache” in the ongoing anti-corruption crusade. Equally, top officials in the present administration, including the chairman of the Presidential anti-corruption committee, have also criticized the third arm of government, over corruption.

On his own part, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, said that:

“The Nigerian Judiciary, though constantly striving to redress the wrongs and tilt the balance in favour of that which is right, has recently had to face the backlash of misguided opinions fashioned without due consideration of the law.”

It would also be recalled that the NBA had paid a courtesy visit to the acting Chairman of The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), wherein the EFCC boss had charged the group to support the fight against corruption.
