National Library owes N508m rent, faces eviction

Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Lanre Aina has revealed that the agency may be evicted from the building it occupies as it owes N508 million as rent.

Aina made the disclosure when members of Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, led by its chairman and former governor of Sokoto State, Aliyu Wamakko, visited the NLN for an oversight function.

Aina said the permanent building of the library which is under construction was stalled due to lack of funds.

He said the N508m debt was rent for 3 years, stating that the landlord has threaten to eject the agency.

He said, “The National Library currently owes N508 million. Three years’ rent is yet to be paid on our temporary corporate headquarters and the landlord has threatened to eject us.

“The present state of the building is deplorable, with leaking roof, cracked walls, malfunctioning toilets and broken water pipes.”
