Monthly allowances: Court grants SERAP’s application against NASS

The Federal High Court in Lagos granted permission to the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project to proceed in its bid to ascertain the exact earnings of national lawmakers.

SERAP is also demanding accountability on the spending of the N500bn budgeted as running cost for the National Assembly between 2006 and 2016.

Justice Rilwan Aikawa on Friday said the application seeking an order of mandamus to compel the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, to give the details of how the National Assembly spent N500bn as running cost for 10 years.

The judge adjourned till December 12, 2017.

In a statement on Sunday by its Deputy Director, SERAP said the order by Justice Aikawa “had cleared the way for it to advance its case against the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.”
