They are already writing petitions against the Minister of Education

A civil rights group, Concerned Citizens for Educational Development (CCED), has sent a letter to the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, accusing the minister of ‘killing’ the education sector through his policies.

According to the petitioners, the recently appointed 13 Vice Chancellors – who he appointed – are running their universities in an autocratic manner and sidelining the universities’ governing council, thus making way for mediocrity, ineptitude and intimidation.

It would be recalled that the new VCs were appointed by the Minister of Education earlier this year and their appointments drew wide condemnation from Nigerians, violating the already established rules of universities on the appointment of university principal officials.

According to CCED, the new VCs are emboldened by the total disregard to the law in their appointments, and are now borrowing a leaf from the Presidency by running their universities autocratically. The VCs are said to be making their own appointments without recourse to the governing council of their institutions.

Adamu is well known as a close associate of President Muhammadu Buhari and his appointment as the minister of education raised lots of questions as he had little or no previous experience in the sector, having worked as a journalist all his life.
