Turkish military coup fails

A coup was on Friday night, attempted in Turkey, as top military officials in the country declared that they had “taken control of the country.”

Major infrastructures in the Turkish capital, Istanbul, were closed down including the city’s main airport and fighter jets were spotted in the skies.

In a telephone call to CNN, the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that he remained leader of the country and the head of its army.

He called on the citizens to protest the military coup.

The military officials who plotted the coup were quoted to have said that they wanted “to reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated.”

The statement by the coup plotters further said “all international agreements and commitments will remain. We pledge that good relations with all world countries will continue.”

According to Al Jazeera, soldiers initially took over the country’s government funded television station and other government owned facilities.

The attempt to overthrow Erdogan’s government would ultimately fail, owing to the determination of government supporters, who trooped out to the streets to protest and fight back.
