Meningitis: Death toll hits 813

The Federal Government on Wednesday said 813 people have died as a result of the recent outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis witnessed in some parts of the country.

Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said this while briefing State House correspondents of the outcome of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council.

Adewole said medical teams dispatched to affected states will soon begin house-to-house searches.

He said, “We are also dispatching medical teams to Sokoto and Zamfara States to help with active case findings. We want to do house-to-house searches so that we can bring those with meningitis out for treatment.

“We are sending teams to each local government. There will be a team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory scientists and each team will be supported by the state governments.

“The state governments have promised logistics and transport to move them round and bring the patients to health facilities.”
