Melaye called Jonathan the “promoter of corruption” but now, Dame Patience is a “promoter” of his book on corruption

Nigerian politicians will never fail to amuse us. Their confidence in the potency of the disease of national amnesia that plagues the populace tricks them into believing they have a free pass to do and then undo; say and then retract and generally do as they please even when it contradicts the very principles they claim to uphold from time to time.

But it’s the two-thousands and the internet is a wicked place with absolutely no amnesia. Which is why we knew a patient search of the world wide web would yield the desired evidence needed to prove that Senator Dino Melaye’s book, “Antidotes for Corruption” (as far as its fully packed launch proves) is already in the running for the “Biggest Sham There Ever Was” contest: 2017 Edition. It’s right behind Loopers and Senator Dino Melaye’s Havard and LSE degrees.

When photos from Senator Melaye’s book launch surfaced yesterday, it was not the irony of his launching a book on fighting corruption that hit home first. Neither was it the fact that we didn’t find any traces representation of Nigeria’s various anti-corruption agencies there – not even his “friend”, “and “brother”, Ibrahim Magu.

It was the presence of the wife of former “President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan”, Mrs Patience Jonathan made conspicuous by as much of her completely money-coloured outfit as her proximity to the star of the show, legislator/singer/performer/possessor of many degrees and now author, Senator Dino Melaye.

In fact, reports say that she “stormed” the event 30 minutes after it had begun to a loud uproar from the seated guests who chanted “Mama Peace” till she found her seat.

But why would Senator Melaye invite Dame Patience to his anti-corruption book launch after calling the government of her husband the most corrupt in the history of our country?

In an interview with Premium Times right after the new administration came into power, then Senator-elect, Dino Melaye could not wait to offload his feelings about GEJ to the world. He said:

“Jonathan is the promoter of corruption. I am telling you that the Government of Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan is the most corrupt in Nigerian history.” –  Premium TimesMay 14 2015.

Surely, he made no attempt to remove the wife of the “promoter of corruption” from the mix when he accused his government of corruption in that interview in 2015 and his more recent comments on EFCC’s failure in fighting anti-corruption, referencing the ongoing case the anti-graft agency has against Patience Jonathan did nothing to remove her either.

In another interview he granted last month, this time with Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, Senator Dino Melaye referenced the EFCC’s losing battle in the ongoing trial between it and Dame Patience Jonathan over the several millions of Dollars and Naira linked to her as a reason why he supports the Senate’s “disqualification” of Ibrahim Magu and EFCC Chair.

“I don’t know why the Senate is being bashed from disqualifying the chairman of the EFCC. he said. We should also be looking at recent times the number of high profile cases the courts have dismissed because of poor preparation before going to court. We have very fantastic high profile cases that we are expecting something very gracious and tangible to come out from – the Fayose case, the Mike Ozekhome case, the Patience Jonathan case and several other cases – that within the last three months have outrageously been lost against the EFCC.”

If he thinks the EFCC should win the case against Patience Jonathan, surely he thinks that she is guilty of the corruption with which she is charged.

So what was she doing helping him launch his book on anti corruption?
