First, we like Korede Bello. What’s there not to like?

Then this new song – which is why we are here, Do Like That is actually a good song. Shock, when you think about the lyrics – they are actually funny. They make sense. SHOCK. “Bend like you want to greet mummy” is a good one, don’t lie.

But beyond the song – we said great, not spectacular by the way – it’s the intent that’s striking.

The lyrics are determinedly sexual – something Korede, trying to attract a pre-sexualised set, has not done before. He was supposed to be the clean one, attracting secondary school students and teenagers. So clean, some churches actually had him headline concerts.

The closest he came to sexy was to lick his lips and have students of British International School lose their minds and disgrace their parents. Or that bend-and-twirl thing that made both sides of the sexuality divide excited at the same time (stop looking at us like that, biko).

But here Korede is doing ‘come hither’, saying bad things, looking at women’s behinds, standing in seedy night clubs, awkwardly trying to look butch, commanding women to disrespect themselves for his unique pleasure, all of that kain thing.

Yeah, so we know this isn’t exactly media stuff.  But we saw this on our TV.

We have our eyes on you, KB. We know this hustle is not easy at all. But we already have Davido, and we already have Wizkid, and we already have all these guys repeating each other’s silly lines about backsides and bums and boobies.

We liked you quirky and silly and fun – with that smirk on your face. And you know, clean.

We have sha lost you.

Now that you want to ‘do her like that’, we hope the risk is worth it.
