The Media Blog: There is no other way to say it – Tinsel is legendary

Say what you will about the show, but 2000 episodes of a television show, shot in Nigeria, is not beans. Especially in the face of setbacks like studio fires and flooding, none of which were enough to take the show off air for even one day.

Who would have thought when it started in 2008 that it would last this long? We’re doubtful even the people behind it anticipated such a long run. And it looks like there are no plans to slow down soon. We might be looking at a Days of Our Lives type situation here. Okay, maybe that’s too far. More like a Generations.

Apart from the fact that, without Tinsel, there would likely be no Hotel Majestic, no Hush, no Hustle or Jemeji (we might even go so far as to give the show credit for Gidi Up, Skinny Girl In Transit, Our Best Friend’s Wedding and several of the webseries we have today, as they all sprung up from the contemporary Nigerian television boom that kicked off with Tinsel 9 years ago,) we also have the show to thank for launching (and re-launching) several careers, bringing several new faces (Gideon Okeke, Linda Ejiofor, Damilola Adegbite, Tomi Odunsi, Gbenro Ajibade, Chris Attoh) to the limelight, and giving already known actors (Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, Jide Kosoko, Ireti Doyle, Funmi Holder, Victor Olaotan) an even bigger platform.

So, yeah, congrats to Tinsel on 2000 episodes. More power!
