The Media Blog: Hope you heard that Facebook is now in the business of TV production

This was announced Monday.

It is working with a small group of partners to start releasing episodes from around August.

“Our goal is to make Facebook a place where people can come together around video,” Nick Grudin, who is Vice President of media partnerships said, adding that they will “experiment with the kinds of shows you can build a community around — from sports to comedy to reality to gaming.”

It kicks off by funding the shows while it works out a revenue formula, and will be spending up to $3m per episode.

Which means, in addition to coming for Snapchat, YouTube and everyone else, Facebook is now setting its eyes on Amazon, Hulu and Netflix.

We never bet against Facebook.
