The Media Blog: So DSTV didn’t let us down too much

Let it not be like we are talking about DSTV too much. But. It has to be said. We want to say we are disappointed, but that would imply we were expecting much to begin with. We weren’t. So we will settle for saying we are underwhelmed. Mostly.

It’s not like we don’t know that they are capable of things that are genuinely great for the market. We saw it in Kenya. But this is Nigeria. And they like to do anyhow here. Because we allow them.

But yes. This #BusinessUnusual campaign. New channels across all bouquets. That’s it. For the most part. The Premium Bouquet will simply see 3 channels now broadcast in High Definition, as opposed to Standard Definition like majority of the other channels. There are also channels like “B4U Movies” and “Eva Plus” (seriously, what in the world?) being added to the other bouquets.

Groundbreaking stuff, right?

Don’t fall asleep just yet. There is one genuinely exciting shake-up. Africa Magic Showcase, their flagship channel for Nigerian content, will now be available to subscribers of the Compact Plus bouquet. This is the channel to which much of Africa Magic’s ‘premium’ content (Tinsel, Hush, big budget movies) has been kept exclusive till now. Given that this is a major reason many people pony up for the most expensive bouquet, throwing open the doors is a very interesting move indeed.

A small, but significant step in the right direction.
