The Media Blog: Akah Nnani is probably, finally coming into his own

What’s that awful name of that barely-there show he used to host on TV Continental? Entertainment Splash, we think.

Thank God this young man escaped that trap nicely. We would be fooling him if we called him one of the best presenters on that format we have seen since lunch-hour TV became a thing in the past two decades, but he had, and brought, a certain spark to an otherwise dour station.

Made plenty sense when in December of 2015, Nnani finally decided to call it quits with the show and, with no apparent gig in the horizon, take a risk and swim with the dolphins (it perhaps helped that the station is owing everyone a salary for as long as we care to count).

And the risk appears to have paid off. First, it freed him up to finally take his YouTube channel a notch higher – positioning him still at the top of the food chain for those who will finally figure out how to make YouTube work for Nigerian content creators not named Immanuella.

This year, he has gotten his biggest views yet including 230,456 views for his Tee-Billz special, almost 100,000 for his Don Jazzy special and experimenting with new formats including on-the-road interviews (the one with Chef Fregz was quite entertaining for us here at TMB, but as we suspected Nigerians don’t care for that kind of s**t).

Before this, he logged his highest at 12,983 for the brilliant impersonation of David Oyedepo. So count that one for good move.

Then his career on TV is finally catching the attention of the mainstream. First, there is the massively hyped On The Real showing on ELTV, and ending this week. Not the best-written, best-produced series you will find, as we have said before, but enough to catch the attention of those who matter. So score two for him.

Then he also anchors an entertainment show on Accelerate TV that might just catch on if he can get enough people to stop not-paying-attention to web-based shows that imitate linear TV models. Score three for him. Again, we wont call him the best actor you’ll find – but we give him an absolute A for effort, and an A+ for compelling presence.

If 2016 isn’t his year, it is almost certainly going to be a rehearsal for 2017, which should most certainly be.
