The Media Blog: Ah, TechPoint has helped us explain the Google spend – somehow sha

So we asked here about why Google is spending money on traditional advertising when it is supposed to have KILLED all traditional media.

And we asked the tech “eco-system” people to help us. And they did.

Our good friends at TechPoint (which is actually our favourite tech blog in Nigeria) have the sort through the thing.

They throw a lot of theories. Some don’t stick – eg, instinctively we know it’s a waste of money for Google to try to get more Nigerians online. If anyone isn’t online by now, it’s probably because of issues like access, and a Google ad isn’t going to help with that.

The one theory that works for us tho:

Google has many offerings asides the web search. Google Now, OK Google commands and the cards function that are incorporated into it are exciting upgrades of the search engine. With the Android Marshmallow 6.0 update, the Now On Tap has made it a lot easier to search for information currently displaying on your screen without leaving the application or web page.

These adverts are leveraging on the hypnotic power of visual imagery to show and subtly point out the many other things a user can do with the Google search engine.

Makes a lot sense. Thumbs up, Victor.
