Eid-el-Kabir: Man dies during alcohol drinking competition

The Eid-el-Kabir festivities on Monday saw the death two persons in different parts of Lagos.

One of the victims simply identified as Onyibo died during a drinking contest with his friends on Adeyeye street at the Orile area of the state.

Onyibo had collapsed during the drinking spree and his friends who were afraid of being arrested, dumped his body at a workshop and fled.

According to the police at the Orile Police Station, the victim had no fixed address, as efforts to reach his family members were not successful.

The officer who disclosed this said, “One Asimiu reported that a man popularly known as Onyibo was found dead in his shop at Alafia bus-stop.”

Another source said, “Onyibo and his friends, mostly touts and street urchins were seen drinking heavily during the day. They were competing over who would finish some bottles of some locally brewed spirit popularly called Sepe.

“It was during the contest that Onyibo collapsed. His friends who tried to revive him immediately took him away. When they were unable to bring him back to life, they quickly abandoned him in a workshop and fled for fear of possible arrest by the police.”

Another victim was crushed by a vehicle at Ikeja Along bus stop, littering his remains all over the spot.

A witness, Joy Alibuofia said, “We were waiting for vehicle at the bus-stop when I saw the man crossing the road. He miscalculated and a bus hit him. He fell down and other vehicles started climbing on his body. Over 50 vehicles crushed him and his body littered the road.

“There is nothing left to identify him. Every part of his body was mashed on the ground. I felt pity for the man. He should be in his early 30s.”
