Social media timelines in Nigeria were this Friday flooded with news about what may be an imminent sack of the Anti-Corruption Czar for the Muhammadu Buhari administration in the works.
According to THISDAY, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has sent a memo to President Muhammadu Buhari recommending the sack of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu. As contained in the report, Magu is said to have been accused of “22 weighty allegations,” including misconduct in the form of insubordination and diversion of recovered looted funds.
With the Minister reportedly shortlisting three candidates to be considered as his replacement, these “weighty” allegations which got a huge number of people talking about his records as the head of the nation’s most prominent anti-corruption agency, is a fresh battle for the Maiduguri-born Police officer, who has remained in an acting capacity since his appointment in November 2015.
The development was occasioned by the senate’s refusal of the 8th Senate to confirm him on at least two occasions, citing a Department of State Services (DSS) report which accused Magu of various forms of misconduct including living in a 40 million naira mansion paid for, by one retired Air Commodore alleged to be involved in shady deals.
Considering the fact that the Office of the AGF supervises the EFCC, it will be interesting to see how Magu gets his head of this troubled waters threatening to eject him from the Eagle-eyed agency.
