Lupita Nyong’o to join Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz and more in “355,” the spy thriller of our dreams

I love a good spy film and Hollywood has given us the funny Spy and the stylish The Man from U.N.C.L.E and the blockbuster Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and the subversive Kingsman: The Secret Service and the historical drama Bridge of Spies and, of course, the classic Bond in Spectre. But have we ever been given a spy thriller with an all-female cast????

America’s Jessica Chastain, Kenya and Mexico’s Lupita Nyong’o, France’s Marion Cotillard, Spain’s Penélope Cruz, and China’s Fan Bingbing are coming together from all corners of the world to save it. And that’s the premise of their planned film 355, which sounds like what spy thriller dreams are made of as well as a suitable complement to the upcoming, female-centric Ocean’s 8.

The film would see the fivesome stop a global organisation from acquiring a weapon that could thrust the entire world into total chaos. Along the way, these strangers and enemies become comrades and friends, and a new faction is formed – code-named 355 (a name they adopt from the first female spy in the American revolution). The  film’s idea was developed by Chastain, and the film will be directed by Simon Kinberg, who is currently working on XMen: Dark Phoenix.

I’m particularly excited for Lupita, who has had a busy first quarter of 2018, starring in blockbuster films and being linked to others still in development. Lupita as a spy will always be cool, and 355 is the new female-leaning spy thriller I’m looking forward to.
