Even though it’s a rumoured casting, and that Lupita Nyongo, Kristen Stewart, and Naomi Scott are still in early talks to star in the reboot of Charlie’s Angels, I think I’m losing my head. This has blessed my nostalgia-loving heart and I’m grateful. Cues Destiny’s Child’s Independent Women for dramatic effect. Now let’s have a cursory look at our potential Angels.
It’s no brainer that Nyong’o is linked to this project, piggybacking off the rippling success of Black Panther and her kick-ass performance. As a matter of fact, the reboot has Nyongo written all over it and we are not worthy. Give us this pure melanin, we pray.
Now Kristen Stewart, who ascended to cultural fame by just being the tragic girlfriend to a sexy, mind-reading vampire in the Twilight movies. She’s evolved from the tropes of rebellious, princess-adjacent teenager to a whole range of adultish acidity, and in 2017, broke down bisexuality for those who didn’t get it. I stan.
Playing the Pink Ranger in 2017’s Power Rangers, the Charlie’s Angels reboot could thrust Naomi Scott into bigger fame. At 25, Scott is the youngest of the trio, with modest television appearances and set to play Princess Jasmine in the live-action remake of Aladdin.
Pitch Perfect 3‘s Elizabeth Banks is set to direct and star as Bosley (the Angels’ liaison with Charlie who has historically been played by a man). Fun fact: Charlie’s Angels originally aired as a TV show that spanned five seasons from 1976 to 1981. Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz starred in the first movie adaptation in 2000, which was followed by a sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003.
There was also a short-lived TV reboot in 2001 starring Minka Kelly and Annie Ilonzeh. While casting negotiations are still going on, I hope this movie gets sealed right away. Rumoured to hit theaters in the summer of 2019, I really can’t wait.
