Loudmouth: Senate summons Maku over ’embarrassing comments’

by Reuben Daba

Whatever the National Assembly members had during their two months recess, it surely brought out the radical bent in them. Since their return, it has been one confrontation after another with the executive arm.

Just a day after the Senate used the I-word in threatening President Jonathan, the senators were at it again, this time summoning the minister of information, Labaran Maku to defend what senators described as his “embarrassing comments”.

Maku had said during a forum with journalists on Wednesday that the FG was not going back on its planned introduction of N5000 notes, saying that resolutions of the National Assembly were not laws, and hence did not have to be obeyed. Incidentally, on the same day Maku made those comments, the president soft-pedaled on the policy by stepping down on the introduction of the N5,000 note by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Labaran Maku is expected to appear before the Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe-led committee on Information, Media and Public Affairs on Tuesday next week.
