My companion in time of need,
as cool as water running down a creek.
Gifted in the art of nursing
to my groans, she came scurrying.
Where would I be without her?
Whose heart if I broke, I cannot mend;
and I would never have pushed her to the edge,
lest I found myself alone on the bench.
No nightingale did ever chant,
a sound as thrilling as her voice.
I’ve never heard another so sweet,
oh, the soothing voice of my dear friend.
When I failed to heed her counsel,
and came on back with wear and tear,
she never said “I told you so…”
She only laughed out loud and held me close.
I wish I had told her how special she was,
The way she cared, no one else did.
It’s too late now to do just that;
too late to say what I should have said.
People do walk in and out of my life,
but none can ever replace my friend;
even in death,
her value remains priceless.
