Listen – even when it’s hard | The Daily Vulnerable

The Daily Vulnerable

What I learnt from the interview with Chioma is something I am learning deeper and deeper over the past few years and months.

It is to listen.

I usually found it accusatory when someone says that I am a person of great power and privilege, and that was why I behaved in a certain way. I usually tell them I’m just trying to do my best.

But, no. As men, we just come born with privilege, we don’t take care of our genitals being cut in other to limit our sexuality, we don’t have live in worry of a driver taking us somewhere and just having their way with us.

To be aware, we need to listen in humility. And also, and this is the part that I figured out, we have to be prepared to be uncomfortable.

The discomfort is part of this process. Especially for those of us who think we are allies. Especially for those who want a cookie; who want a participation trophy.

Listen. And be ready to be uncomfortable.

This is how society gets better.
