“We have enough issues on our hands to begin to discuss a Senator with illicit affairs“, Lagos-based lawyer, Liborous Oshoma said to Premium Times in an interview on the scandalous video of Senator Bukar Ibrahim that emerged on Sunday.

The man is right! A Nigerian senator (grown man by the way) trying to satisfy his libido is not national business, especially not at this time when our President is still AWOL and incommunicado. But still, we need to briefly address Senator Ibrahim’s brewing scandal.

When the video first surfaced on the internet, it didn’t strike a nerve in us because although it was obvious the Senator had just gotten up to something and was dressing up after it, there was hardly any proof of sexual activity so we thought we might let the matter slide.

When approached for comments on the video, Senator Bukar Ibrahim may have just stepped on our toes with his brazen response. He said, “This is a personal, private matter. What does my having been with a girl have to do with the public?” Yes true, it’s indeed a private matter to be with any “lady” you want and we’ve chosen not to repeat the word “girl” because we’re not sure what the Senator means by “girl” and we’d rather not even imagine it.

But we’re very particular about the part of the Senator’s response where he said he owes nobody any explanation for his private life. Bukar Ibrahim, who was governor of Yobe state from 1999 to 2007 must know that he may not owe any of us an explanation but he needs to have a conversation with his conscience.

When Ibrahim was governor, records show he signed a set of bills which introduced Sharia law into the state. One of the bills prohibits illicit activities including consumption of alcohol and prostitution. So this man goes from that one who clamps down on vices in the community to the one who is engaged in sexual activities with apparently younger ladies and he wants us all to let it go? It’s not that simple.

His audacity did not end there. He went on to say he “could not remember where and when the affair filmed in the leaked video took place” suggesting that he’s been countless of such affairs. Anyone else agrees this man should be put up for public flogging?
