Senator Dino Melaye’s “comedy of errors” has just begun.
It was only on Wednesday that his constituents in the Kogi West district submitted a petition to INEC demanding the recall of the Senator from the House.
Reacting to the move, Dino Melaye went on a Twitter rampage where he dismissed the attempt to have him kicked out of the Senate. He threatened that “many will go to jail”, called it a “comedy of errors” and declared “no retreat no surrender”.
Well, it looks like things just got real for Senator Melaye as the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded with a statement acknowledging receipt of the petition and confirming that the recall process will kick off with a verification of the petitioners.
Before you fault us for getting unnecessarily excited about this, understand that this is a start. If this process goes through and Senator Melaye is actually recalled, then that speaks victory for democracy in Nigeria.
On the other hand though, if it happens that these petitioners are ghosts then Kogi governor, Yahaya Bello may have just sealed his own doom.
